This project entails creating a 'wall' of personalized handmade tiles. Originally we had thought of creating personalized bricks, such as those you often find in parks, museums and schools throughout the United States. Then we realized it would be more symbolic to create something more in tone with our surroundings. Therefore, this wall will be created to have the appearance of a traditional dry-stone wall.
The donations start at 150 Euros and other 'suggested' donations are 300, 600, and 900 Euros. The maximum size for one stone is 900 square centimeters (900 Euros for about 140 square inches). However, if one wants to make a larger donation, the stones could be divided into smaller ones that together would create the size requested. The reason for having a 'maximum' size is purely an esthetic decision. A traditional dry-stone wall would never have a stone larger than that! Each stone will be individually made, so the actual form will vary. These are our suggested donations. Yet you are free to choose any sum over 150 Euros and your tile will be made accordingly (one Euro per sq. centimeter).
You can choose to engrave a name, name of a business, school, association, etc., or short phrase. The country of origin for the donator will also be included in the engraving. We ask you stay within 60 characters, including spaces. Keep in mind that since these are handmade one-by-one, the size of the writing will depend on the number of characters. The less one writes, the larger the letters will be and therefore will be easier to read.
When you were in Monterosso, you might have visited one of the shops belonging to the ceramicists who will be creating our wall. They are all from Monterosso and their studio is located five minutes above the village. Learn more about them here: http://fabbricadarte.blogspot.com/.
Payments can be made through Paypal with a credit card, Paypal account or through direct bank transfer. All payments go directly into the town’s fund for reconstruction, which is managed by Monterosso’s town hall. This way we can ensure that all proceeds stay within our community.
Step 1: Please visit the site www.rebuildmonterosso.com and click on the Paypal donation button. Kindly note for now the Paypal site is only in Italian.
If you have difficulties, please see this page for tips in English
OR If you prefer sending your donation through a direct bank transfer, we could provide the exact coordinates.
Step 2: After making your donation, please compile the Form attached and email it back to us at email@example.com. Be sure to include a copy of your email receipt received from Paypal (to your email account).
Attached please find the order form for the stones. If you have any questions, or if you need clarification regarding the project, please feel free to contact us. The official site for the project will go “live” at the end of the month. To help out those creating the tiles, we wanted to immediately begin gathering requests.
Step 3: Upon receiving these two documents, we will confirm your donation and add you to our ‘progress reports’ email list.
Step 4: After your order has been confirmed, you (and the honoree, if you are donating the stone in the name of someone else) will be informed in a monthly e-newsletter about the wall’s progress as well as the village’s state of reconstruction.
We anticipate the wall’s first section to be complete by the beginning of the summer 2012; from which point you would then be updated monthly. Since each stone will be individually handmade, each will be made on demand. We hope to have a significant portion of our goal reached by October 25th, 2012 - the one year anniversary of the tragedy.
We are also available to answer any questions you might have about making significant donations towards any other specific project to rebuild Monterosso (school, parks, benches, etc.). Any and all participation is more than welcome.
Thank you again for your kindness and consideration,
The community of Monterosso al Mare
