Better late than never: The San Giovanni Battista festival of Monterosso

The patron Saint of Monterosso San Giovanni Battista is celebrated every year on the 24th of June. This 'festa' which also marks the middle of the summer, is celebrated, as it has been for ages, with a religious precession through the village carrying statue of San Giovanni Battista and  a bonfire.  The modern touch has been fireworks as well, but there was no room for fireworks after what happened last October. However as old furniture piled up on the beach, this time brought by hands not strong waters, the excitement commenced about the 'falo`' the bonfire. The days just before the festival the pile just grows and grows people throwing out old doors, desks, tables and chairs and then the evening of the 24th this happens, breathtaking really. Nothing could make it feel more like summer.
